’Twas the show before Christmas, when all through the hall,
The patrons were list’ning, alert one and all.
The singers were caroling loudly and clear
In hopes they imparted good holiday cheer.
The holiday season has many a treat
As all through December we mingle and eat.
But on this day, their schedule had been such a crunch
That our singers had not eaten dinner or lunch.
Then all of a sudden, during one special song
The conductor was wondering what had gone wrong.
The singers were starting to show a strange mood,
Their stomachs were growling, and craving some food!
Now as they all harmonized sweetly in thirds,
Their hunger induced them to mix up the words.
While visions of sugarplums danced in their head,
They sang not of Christmas, but of feasting instead.
So listen quite carefully, children, and hear
These everyday carols, familiar and dear,
Corrupted by singers, who, needing to eat,
Can’t help but insert thoughts of holiday treats.
This clever holiday farce begins with "Now bring us some figgy pudding," then breaks into a quodlibet of numerous well-known carols, with the words corrupted to talk about food. Included in the medley are "O Come, Have a Plateful," "Carol of the Smells," "Deck the Hall with Rolls of Jelly," "Ding Dongs and a Cherry Pie," and many others. It is accompanied by piano, or piano and percussion, or piano, 8 winds and percussion, or orchestra.
