The latte cantate

A modern version of J. S. Bach’s Coffee Cantata
adapted by Lee G. Barrow

For Soprano and Mezzo-soprano solos
with Tenor solo and/or SATB choir

“Be quiet! Not a word!
And please, silence all your cell phones.”
Thus begins the tenor recitative (or opening chorus) of this updated version of J. S. Bach’s comic cantata about a girl who loves coffee more than life itself.
“O my daughter gives me headaches,
Bring me now some Advil, please!”
In this version, a mother desperately tries to convince her daughter to give up her coffee craze. She tries everything--taking away her computer, never taking her shopping for clothes, and even restricting her from seeing her boyfriend:
“What about your boyfriend then; give up coffee or you can’t go out with him, ever.”
“You know--the coffee smells much better!”
Finally, Mother threatens not to buy the car she has promised her daughter. It appears that this will finally work, but in the end the daughter outsmarts her mother, finding a sneaky way to get her car and a cappuccino maker as well.
